Trauma Counselor Dayshift M F

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Master’s degree in psychology, Social Work, Counseling or other mental health related field.
Formal training and a minimum of 3 years’ experience in substance abuse counseling.

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
To take responsibility for performing necessary screening for trauma patients related to substance abuse and acute stress/post-traumatic stress disorders, support assigned trauma injury/violence prevention programs, provide brief culturally competent bedside interventions, and make appropriate outpatient referrals for trauma patients admitted to the acute care setting.
- PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT) for trauma patients identified and referred for screening by Trauma APC; perform Acute Stress Disorder (ASD)/Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) screening for all trauma patients admitted to the hospital.
- Identify the patient’s social/behavioral needs and implement measures to meet the needs of the adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations.
- Provide brief, culturally competent bedside interventions related to the above screenings and by staff referral for patients admitted to the trauma service who are expected to remain in the inpatient setting.
- Provide outpatient referrals for treatment as needed for patients admitted to the trauma service.
- Coordinate Trauma Survivor Network programs and assist interested patients with engaging in that resource.
- Perform outpatient follow-up for patients counselled while in the inpatient setting at appropriate interval(s) post-discharge.
- Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team regarding treatment plan, treatment response, and discharge planning as appropriate throughout the patient stay.
- Effectively communicate with the multidisciplinary team to ensure timely and appropriate documentation related to treatment, referral, and disposition plans.
- Acknowledge and advocate for patient’s rights and maintain confidentiality of department and patient information.
- Plan, implement, and coordinate injury/violence prevention programs consistent with systems needs and goals in response to identified risk factors/demographics/statistics from the Trauma Registry and according to American College of Surgeons (ACS) trauma center standards.
- Coordinate and provide education related to various injury/violence prevention programs/topics as assigned for trauma inpatients, caregivers, and community stakeholders.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate educational programs and materials for assigned injury/violence prevention topics.
- Apply principles of age-appropriate teaching strategies.
- Manage material and other resources in a cost-effective manner.
- Serve as a professional role model and as a representative for the trauma program within ChristianaCare and in the community.
- Perform assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices.
- Report to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other caregivers, patients, and/or visitors.
- Perform other duties as required.
- SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
LCSW preferred.
Maintain licensure.
