The long-term substitute teacher will assume the full instructional responsibilities of an Upper School Social Studies teacher, providing consistent, high-quality instruction and maintaining continuity for students throughout the remainder of the academic year. The successful candidate will create a supportive and intellectually engaging classroom environment that encourages students to think critically, communicate effectively and engage thoughtfully with historical and contemporary issues. Key Responsibilities: - Teach assigned Upper School Social Studies courses in accordance with established curriculum and department expectations, including AP US History and AP World History. - Implement engaging lesson plans that promote critical thinking, inquiry, discussion and effective written and oral communication. - Manage assessments, grading, and communication with students and families during the assignment period. - Maintain accurate records of student attendance, assignments and academic progress. - Maintain a positive, respectful and well-managed classroom environment. - Collaborate with members of the Social Studies Department and Upper School faculty to ensure continuity of instruction and student support. - Participate in faculty meetings, professional responsibilities, student supervision and other duties typically associated with an Upper School faculty position. - Support the mission, values and community expectations of Norfolk Collegiate School. - Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of Upper School or designee. Qualifications: - Bachelor's degree required; degree in history, social studies, education or a related field preferred. - Previous teaching experience at the secondary level strongly preferred. - Demonstrated ability to engage and support students with a range of learning styles and abilities. - Strong classroom management, organizational and communication skills. - Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, students and families. - Experience in an independent school environment is a plus. Compensation: - $280.00 - $320.00 per day, based on relevant education, teaching experience and licensure.
