The long-term substitute will teach 12th Grade World Literature, including regular and honors sections; 12th Grade Advanced Placement Literature; and a mixed-grade Publications course. All materials for the courses will be provided in advance by the classroom teacher, and grading of major projects and papers will be completed by the classroom teacher. Substitute responsibilities will include leading students through prepared daily discussions of assigned texts, assigning and grading smaller homework assignments and classwork, maintaining established classroom routines, and keeping students on track with project and publication deadlines. Consistent with the National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools (NSBECS), the successful candidate will support St. Edward’s commitment to Catholic identity, academic excellence, high expectations, student growth, and a learning environment grounded in the dignity of each person. **COURSE CONTENT AND RESPONSIBILITIES**  ***12th Grade World Literature – Regular and Honors***  The World Literature courses will include the study of Dante’s Inferno and Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. The long-term substitute will: • Lead students through prepared daily discussions of the texts. • Guide students in close reading, literary analysis, interpretation, and discussion. • Help students examine themes, characters, historical and cultural context, literary devices, and authorial choices. • Assign and grade smaller homework assignments, classwork, and other formative work prepared by the classroom teacher. • Maintain the established pacing of both the regular and honors sections. • Support students in meeting expectations appropriate to each course level. ***12th Grade AP Literature***  The AP Literature course will cover part of Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, along with smaller works, readings, and activities prepared by the classroom teacher. The long-term substitute will: • Lead students through prepared discussions of Hamlet, The Importance of Being Earnest, and additional assigned literature. • Facilitate college-level literary discussion and textual analysis appropriate for an AP Literature course. • Support students in analyzing characterization, structure, language, tone, symbolism, theme, and other literary elements. • Continue established AP Literature routines and expectations. • Assign and grade smaller homework assignments, classwork, and formative assessments as directed by the classroom teacher. • Keep students progressing through the prepared curriculum and on pace for the classroom teacher’s return. Major papers and projects will be graded by the regular classroom teacher. ***Publications***  The mixed-grade Publications course includes written, design, and photographic work for the school yearbook and school newspaper. The long-term substitute will: • Guide students through prepared writing, editing, photography, layout, and design assignments. • Support students in completing content for the school yearbook and school newspaper. • Monitor individual and group progress on publication assignments. • Keep students on track with established production schedules and project deadlines. • Help students organize written and visual content and complete assigned sections of publications. • Encourage collaboration, accountability, accuracy, and attention to detail throughout the publication process. • Maintain communication regarding upcoming deadlines and incomplete work. Familiarity with publication design, journalism, photography, yearbook production, or student media is beneficial but not required. **CATHOLIC IDENTITY AND MISSION**  In alignment with the NSBECS Mission and Catholic Identity standards, the long-term substitute teacher will: • Support the mission of St. Edward Central Catholic High School and contribute positively to the Catholic identity of the school. • Model respect for the dignity of every student and member of the school community. • Foster a classroom environment rooted in respect, responsibility, compassion, and thoughtful dialogue. • Encourage students to consider literature in the context of the human experience, moral decision-making, culture, relationships, and faith when appropriate to the curriculum. • Participate appropriately in the prayer and faith life of the school community. **ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE**  In alignment with the NSBECS Academic Excellence standards, the long-term substitute teacher will: • Maintain high academic expectations while providing appropriate support for students. • Use prepared instructional materials and lesson plans to provide purposeful, engaging instruction. • Encourage critical thinking, close reading, effective communication, and evidence-based discussion. • Provide timely feedback on smaller assignments and formative work. • Monitor student progress and communicate concerns to the classroom teacher and Dean of Academics as appropriate. • Support students of varying academic abilities while maintaining established course expectations. • Preserve instructional continuity throughout the maternity leave. **CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT**  The long-term substitute teacher will: • Maintain a safe, respectful, organized, and academically focused classroom. • Follow the classroom routines and expectations established by the regular teacher. • Establish and reinforce expectations for participation, behavior, deadlines, and academic integrity. • Encourage students to listen carefully, communicate respectfully, ask meaningful questions, and support their ideas with evidence. • Maintain accurate attendance and academic records. **PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES**  The long-term substitute teacher will: • Collaborate with the English Department, Dean of Academics, and other faculty members as needed. • Communicate with the classroom teacher regarding pacing, student progress, upcoming assignments, and any concerns that arise. • Follow all school policies and procedures related to instruction, supervision, student conduct, technology, confidentiality, and safety. • Attend required faculty meetings or school activities occurring during the assignment when appropriate. • Use school technology effectively to communicate, distribute materials, maintain records, and support instruction. **QUALIFICATIONS AND PREFERRED SKILLS**  • Bachelor’s degree required; degree in English, English Education, Literature, Communications, or a related field preferred. • Illinois Professional Educator License or appropriate substitute teaching credentials preferred. • Previous high school teaching experience preferred. • Experience teaching AP English Literature is preferred but not required. • Strong knowledge of English language arts, literature, and literary analysis. • Confidence facilitating discussion of challenging high school and college-level texts. • Strong classroom management, communication, and organizational skills. • Ability to maintain curriculum pacing and established classroom expectations. • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite Online • Experience with journalism, yearbook, photography, publication design, or student publications is beneficial. • Commitment to supporting the mission and Catholic identity of St. Edward Central Catholic High School.
